On Monday, April 20 at 7 p.m. in the Library Programming Center, join Wayne State University art history professor Wendy C. Evans for her talk, Picturing America.
America’s art tells America’s story – the optimism, struggles, triumphs, humor and pain. In a richly illustrated presentation, Evans will explore how people from the earliest inhabitants to artists of today have pictured the society, history and landscape of this country and reflected its ideas and ideals. Images will range from realistic paintings by John Singleton Copley to modern abstractions by Jackson Pollock and from the innocent America captured in Norman Rockwell's early work to the struggles of black Americans seen in his late paintings and in the work of black artists like Jacob Lawrence.
This program is held in conjunction with the National Endowment for the Humanities Picturing America exhibit. Registration is required. Please call (586) 446-2640 or visit www.shpl.net.
