Peace Like a River

The latest book discussed by the Mom's Club Book Discussion Group, Peace Like a River by Leif Enger grabs you on the first page, as the narrator of the book is born. Asthmatic Reuben Land comes into this world with failing lungs, and stays in it because of a miracle executed by his father. Though the miracles continue in this book they are surprisingly a sidenote to the story of Reuben, his precocious and charming sister Swede, his hard-working, devout father Jeremiah and his brother and oldest child Davy, an outlaw whom the family crosses the country to find after he is convicted of murder and breaks out of jail. Beautifully constructed characters and rich prose make Peace Like a River, set in rural Minnesota and the Badlands of North Dakota in the early 1960s, a touching and memorable read.

Spend October with Edgar Allan Poe @ the library!

Edgar Allan Poe Month @ the Sterling Heights Public Library begins in 10 days! The special month of activities centered around one of America's greatest authors runs from Oct. 1-31. Movies, a book discussion, a lecture by the president of the Poe Studies Association and a performance by a band are planned. Click HERE to check out our Web site for more information!

Mom's Club Book Discussion is Monday

Stay-at-home and part time working moms, this book discussion group is for you. Take this chance to get out of the house and meet other moms in the area. Feel free to bring the kids, too! Toys will be set up for children in the back of the room while the book discussion takes place. Moms should also feel free to bring another book title you enjoyed, be it a fiction, non-fiction or parenting selection, to share with the group.

On Monday, May 18 at 10 a.m. the group will discuss The Reader by Bernhard Schlink. Also made into a movie, this book takes readers to post-war Germany for a coming-of-age story that tackles the question of good vs. evil.

Light refreshments will be served. Participants are responsible for obtaining a copy of the title under discussion. Reservations are not required. For more information, call the library at (586) 446-2640.

Mom's Club Book Discussion is Monday

The Mom's Club Book Discussion Group will tackle Revolutionary Road by Richard Yates on Monday, April 20 at 10 a.m. in the Library Programming Center. Stay-at-home moms, part-time working moms and care givers are welcome to come for the discussion and light refreshments and bring the kids too! A play area will be set up for the little ones. Feel free to come even if you haven't finished the book, have only seen the movie or would like to have some input on future reading selections. It's a great way to meet other area moms!
